‘Talk to Me Goose’: Making Sense of AgVend’s New AI Co-Pilot
Editor’s note: In a recent issue of Upstream Ag Professional, agribusiness analyst Shane Thomas dives into AgVend’s new AI Co-Pilot Goose, shares an overview of how the company is positioned, the pricing strategy, the future initiatives, and where genAI currently is on the Gartner Hype Cycle. Here’s a summary of that article:
AgVend, a leading provider of digital enablement solutions for agribusiness, has introduced Goose, an AI co-pilot designed to enhance the functionality of its existing platform. Goose aims to revolutionize the way ag retail teams operate by automating tedious tasks and providing valuable insights. This new feature, available for free, demonstrates AgVend’s commitment to equipping agronomy sellers, grain merchandisers, and energy sales reps with advanced technology to optimize their work.
The adoption of generative AI (genAI) is rapidly increasing in the agriculture industry, with many companies launching new products. Businesses prefer a single, comprehensive software solution, known as a control point, that handles essential operations. A control point is the primary application that users rely on daily, encompassing critical transactional and financial software for ag retail staff, such as grain merchandising software and ERPs.
AgVend has established itself as the control point for ag retail staff, handling essential tasks like invoicing, inventory management, and pricing insights. This strategic position allows AgVend to integrate Goose effectively, leveraging its control point status to enhance the functionality of its platform. Goose utilizes a combination of OpenAI GPT-4, GPT-4o, and GPT-4mini models, but is designed to be flexible, allowing for the integration of other models as needed. This flexibility is achieved through generic patterns and abstractions, enabling AgVend to adapt to the evolving AI landscape.

Goose functions as a personalized partner for ag retail professionals, capable of identifying key insights and automating administrative tasks. For instance, agronomists can use Goose to identify major urea buyers who haven’t booked for the fall, or grain merchandisers can draft messages updating prospects on market changes. AgVend’s focus on customizing Goose for agricultural applications involves substantial work in parsing agricultural data and building a dictionary for agricultural terms, ensuring effective interaction with the AI.
The beta version of Goose is currently available to a select group of AgVend customers, with a full rollout expected by the end of 2024. Goose is designed for agribusiness staff, not farmers, and currently lacks voice functionality, which is planned for future updates. Notably, AgVend has opted for an indirect monetization approach, offering Goose at no additional cost to customers. This strategy aims to increase software engagement, customer conversion, and retention rates, ultimately driving revenue growth.
AgVend’s co-founder and CPO, Eli Rosenberg, indicated that Goose’s capabilities will expand to include predictive forecasting, demand generation predictions, and inventory management suggestions, further enhancing its value. The goal is to integrate various data sources, such as trial data, CRM information, and weather data, to improve user experience and efficiency.
AgVend’s approach to integrating Goose exemplifies a targeted and calculated strategy, focusing on enhancing the core offering and adding value for agribusiness professionals. This method positions AgVend as a leader in the agtech space, leveraging AI to improve efficiency and profitability in a changing agricultural landscape.
