Patricia Stock

Who are you and what do you do in the ag tech industry?
Patricia Stock: Since early in my career, I have been involved in research and in the dissemination of knowledge on agricultural technologies that replace chemical pesticides. As an extension agent in Argentina, I provided knowledge on new agricultural technologies and practices to enhance the livelihoods of farmers. I worked with growers, farmers, and community leaders to enable action-oriented partnerships and collaborations to improve food production and consumption. Throughout my 30 years of academic career in the U.S. (both in Arizona and California), I have led research and have trained students and scientists from more than 40 countries. In this role, I have empowered these professionals with knowledge and tools to design, facilitate and execute projects related to environmentally safe alternatives for the control of insect pests.

How did you achieve the success that you have in the industry?
PS: I am a hardworking person; I learned early in my life that nothing should be taken for granted and that it is very important to do your homework. I am very passionate about what I do, and this is what drives my motivation and energy.

Could you share a pivotal moment in your career that helped you get to where you are today?
PS: With no experts on my field of research in Argentina, I soon learned as a graduate student that I needed to seek resources to travel to receive the training I was looking for. Coming to the U.S. was on top of my list but I never imagined I would stay here to build my academic career. The path to success was not easy, and certainly did not follow a traditional academic path, but I worked very hard and never took anything for granted to get me where I currently am.

What advice would you give to other women trying to succeed in this field?
PS: Never let anyone tell you “No” or “You cannot do it.” Make sure your voice is heard and listen to your heart. Women are gifted with the art of multitasking, we do wonderfully at working on various agendas and projects at the same time. Work hard but also take time to relax and take good care of yourselves, dedicate time to your family and friends. Life is too short, so explore options that help you reset and connect to nature and our loved ones.

What’s a fun or unexpected fact about yourself?
PS: I love doing crafts. While I was a student, I did a lot of knitting to relax. I have also taken pottery classes, done silver jewelry, and taught myself how to watercolor. I have learned to enjoy travelling by myself around the world; it has given me the opportunity to learn about myself and be adventurous. Travelling is what I enjoyed doing the most and I am thankful to my career for having allowed me to travel to six different continents!

What was your first job?
PS: I worked as an English tutor at home in Argentina. After graduation, I was hired as an extension agent for the Ministry of Agriculture Education in the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina.
